A drone show over the Vatican in 2025, produced by Nova Sky Stories, featured religious imagery and inspired personal spiritual experiences. The event was witnessed by tens of thousands and involved prominent figures like Kimbal Musk.
During a drone spectacle over the Vatican on September 13, 2025, tens of thousands witnessed images of Baby Jesus and the Pietà formed by drones, a show produced by Nova Sky Stories. An attendee described experiencing a profound spiritual moment during the event, which has sparked widespread discussion about the intersection of technology and faith.
The event was organized by Nova Sky Stories, a company owned by Kimbal Musk, and included visual representations of religious icons such as Baby Jesus and Michelangelo’s Pietà, created via thousands of drones flying in coordinated patterns. Witnesses confirmed the images appeared clearly in the sky, with some reporting emotional and spiritual reactions.
According to Kimbal Musk, the show aimed to deliver a message amid global religious conflicts. Vatican officials participated in discussions with the production team, and Pope Leo, who watched from a nearby apartment, reportedly expressed admiration, telling Musk he made Michelangelo proud. The event was part of a broader trend of drone displays replacing fireworks at major celebrations.
Impact of the Vatican Drone Show on Faith and Technology
This event highlights how advanced drone technology is being used to create religious and artistic expressions, potentially influencing public perceptions of spirituality and art. The personal account of spiritual awakening indicates that such spectacles can evoke emotional and religious responses, prompting further discussion about the role of technology in faith practices and communal experiences. As an affiliate, we earn on qualifying purchases.
Historical and Cultural Background of Drone Art Installations
Drone shows have evolved significantly since Intel’s 2015 Guinness World Record with 100 drones. Major events like the Super Bowl halftime show and national celebrations have increasingly incorporated drone displays. The Vatican spectacle marks a notable convergence of religious symbolism and cutting-edge technology, reflecting a broader acceptance of digital art in sacred spaces. Kimbal Musk’s company, Nova Sky Stories, has been involved in this movement, inspired by earlier experiments such as Burning Man’s fireless drone art in 2021.“In a world where all the religious people are fighting each other, it was really a powerful message.”
— Kimbal Musk
Unconfirmed Aspects of the Spiritual Experience
While multiple witnesses reported feeling a spiritual awakening, it remains unclear whether these reactions were solely due to the visual spectacle or influenced by personal belief and expectation. The extent of the event’s impact on individual faith or spiritual practices is still being evaluated, and there is no scientific consensus on the emotional effects of drone displays in religious contexts.
Future of Drone Art in Religious and Public Events
Further integration of drone technology into religious ceremonies and major public celebrations is anticipated, with potential for new artistic and spiritual expressions. Discussions about the cultural and ethical implications of such displays are ongoing, and more events blending digital art with spiritual symbolism may be organized in the future.
